New Motor Vehicle Sales, Total vehicles - Short term

• Trend - The February 2009 trend estimate for new motor vehicle sales (74 254) was 1.1% lower than the corresponding estimate for January 2009 and 18.0% lower than the trend estimate 12 months earlier. Decreases in the trend estimate continue to be recorded for new motor vehicle sales.
• Seasonally adjusted - The February 2009 seasonally adjusted estimate for total sales of new motor vehicles (73 190) decreased by 3.5% compared with January 2009.

• Trend - When trend estimates for February 2009 are compared with January 2009, other vehicles sales decreased by 2.8%, passenger vehicle sales by 0.7% and sports utility vehicle sales by 0.4%. Compared with 12 months earlier, sales of all vehicle types were lower in February 2009. Sales of sports utility vehicles have decreased by 22.2%, other vehicles by 19.0% and passenger vehicles by 16.2% when compared with the February 2008 level.
• Seasonally adjusted - On a seasonally adjusted basis, February 2009 sales of all vehicle types decreased, other vehicles by 4.4%, passenger vehicles by 3.8% and sports utility vehicles by 1.7% when compared with January 2009.

• Trend - The Australian Capital Territory was the only state or territory for which the February 2009 trend estimate of total new vehicle sales exceeded the trend estimate for January 2009. The increase of 1.2% contrasts with decreases in all other states and territories, the largest being South Australia by 2.6%, Western Australia by 1.7% and Tasmania and Northern Territory both decreasing by 1.4%.
• Seasonally adjusted - When comparing February 2009 with January 2009, the Australian Capital Territory was the only state or territory to show an increase in the seasonally adjusted estimate of total vehicle sales with a rise of 0.3%. South Australia decreased by the largest proportion, with seasonally adjusted sales falling by 9.7% compared with January 2009 followed by decreases in Victoria (5.3%), Tasmania (3.9%) and Queensland (2.6%).
